Your one stop for reef aquarium information

Stocking Too fast

Stocking too fast will end up giving you a lot of various problems.

The first thing that will happen is you will put your tank inhabitants at risk. This goes for all the inhabitants of your tank including fish, corals, invertebrates, etc.

Some people start adding living things to their tank right away, even before the tank has cycled. This is a not a good thing to do. When your tank is going through its first cycle, it is full of toxic chemicals that are very bad for fish, corals and invertebrates. Most of the time these toxins (ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate) will outright kill anything you may put in the water.

Don't be cruel. Take your time when starting a new tank. Even once your tank has cycled, you can only add animals slowly, a few at a time. Invertebrates are especially vulnerable to ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. They cannot tolerate high levels of those chemicals.

The reason you must take your time is because of the toxins caused by adding more bio load to the tank. At the end of your initial cycle there will be colonies of bacteria present in the water system. These bacteria are the result of the changing of ammonia to nitrite, then nitrite to nitrate. At this time your aquarium has an equilibrium or is balanced. As soon as you add any living thing to the tank, it will produce waste. This causes a slight increase in the ammonia level. More bacteria need to form to turn the ammonia into nitrate and so on.

If you were to add many lives to your tank all at once, the needed bacteria colonies are not present and you could easily end up starting another cycle. That can mean disaster for your tank.

Take it slow

Give your reef aquarium plenty of time to adjust and balance itself by only adding a few lives at a time.

Wait several days or a week before adding more.

Test your tank for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate during this time to make sure there is no spike of those chemicals. If there is a spike, do a water change right away.

If it's a big spike change at least 25% to 50% of your water. That will help dilute the chemicals and lower the levels of toxins.
