Most if not all of the normal household cleaners and/or soaps will have some kinds of chemicals in them.

These chemicals will be nearly impossible to remove from your tank after you have used them.

No matter how much rinsing with fresh water you do, some chemicals will remain, so please don't use them.

If you need something stronger than plain water, you can use some white vinegar. It will disinfect and clean glass and acrylic very nicely. Just make sure you rinse with plenty of clean water to remove all traces of the vinegar.

While we are discussing this, it is very important that you set aside some cloths, a sponge, a couple of food grade pails and anything else you will use for aquarium cleaning.

Keep all these things separate from the other things in your household. You must not contaminate them.

It is best if you don't use any arousal sprays in the vicinity your aquarium.

It takes very little pollutants of that type to have a very bad effect on the life in your tank.
